Fuchsia is a popular hanging basket item. These plants can exhibit many natural forms, used in hanging baskets, or be trained as tree like specimens. The penclulous flowers vary from solid colors to combination of white, red, pink or purple.

NUTRITION

TEMPERATURE LIGHT
Plant fuchsia in a well drained porous media with a ph of 6.0 to 6.5

After planting, allow the crop to dry out between watering. Fuchsia are susceptible to several root rot organisms and the use of fungicide for their control is recommended. When the crop becomes established, watering will become very regular. At this time, do not allow fuchsia to dry out too severely. Watering must occur before wilting. Fuchsias are not heavy feeders. Constant 200ppm nitrogen will provide adequate fertility. The use of 20-10-20 or 15-16-17 are commonly used fertilizers for fuchsia. Watch soluble salt level. Roots can be easily injured.

60-65 degrees night and 70-75 degrees day temps fuchsia must be protected from the bright hot sun of spring. Shade is a necessity. We start shading our crop in mid-February. By mid-march at least 50% shade is required. Fuchsia are long day plants and will initiate flower buds when the day length is greater than 12 hours.
INSECTS DISEASES SCHEDULING
Whiteflies, aphids, thrips, and spider mites are common problems on fuchsia. Check with your state floriculture extension agent for control measures. Botrytis, pythium, rhizoctonia, and thielaviopsis are the primary diseases, which plague fuchsia. As above check with your ext. Agent for the recommended control measures. We like to have our baskets planted around the first of January. This allows us to pinch them twice by the third week of February. This ensures heavily branched baskets. The crop will flower approximately 8 weeks after the final pinch. Plant 5-7 plants per 10” basket.
