Evolvulus does not have any special
nutritional requirements. A program of 150 to 200 ppm nitrogen from a
20-10-20 fertilizer works nicely. A clear water irrigation should be used
occasionally to keep the soluble salt level from getting to high. |
Evolvulus does not like to be grown wet (soggy) during the cloudy cold weather of winter. For us here in Springfield, IL. It does not start growing real well until late March-early April. Evolvulus is a warm weather crop. If started early be careful not to run it overly wet. Allow to dry between irrigations using a media that has drainage and is well aerated. | Evolvulus is a warm weather crop. It requires at least 65-degree night temps. With 70-75 degree day temps. It can be grown colder but beware that it will grow slowly and that the irrigation must be managed more carefully. | Evolvulus loves the light and heat. Grow it in full sun and watch it go. A common plant that is a summer performer. |
| INSECTS | DISEASES | SCHEDULING |
| Evolvulus does not have any major pests associated with it. We have seen whitefly however and it can be controlled with those chemicals used to control this pest on poinsettias. | Growing media drenches are necessary during the dark of winter to keep the root system free of disease. Phythium root rot can be a problem. | We recommend five liners per 10” hanging basket. It should be pinched at least twice, leaving 6 to 8 weeks after the final pinch for the plant to fill out and flower. For the finished 10” basket 14 to 16 weeks are required. For a full 4” one liner would be stuck and it should be pinched once. The 4” product requires 12-14 weeks to finish. |
